How difficult is it to install the mid-PTO kit to a JD 870? Can I do it or do I contact a JD dealer?

Have you priced out the kit for your 870 yet? There are couple of kits that compose the pto kit. Depending on what you want a mid pto kit for, you may want to sit down and have a good shot of some Jack Daniels or something. For mowing it would be far cheaper to go with a RFM. I would price the entire pto kit set up out first and see if you still want to procede first. The jdparts web site allows you to look up the parts you will need and price them. On the newer tractors such as mine, the mid pto is electicly actuated and much easier to install. I believe there is a bit more to it with the 870. ....

Nice to hear from an 870 owner. I installed a kit on mine over the summer. If you're mechanically inclined, it's straightforward, but involved. You've got to drain the trans, remove the left rear fender, install the shaft and gears through the rear and bottom of the trans. The most challenging part is the linkages for the engagement and the pto brake. It seems like 50-75 pieces. After puzzling over the directions, you'll find that it all goes together pretty sensibly. I hear it's geting hard to find the kits. Mine was sitting in a dealers's stock (last one ). He let it go for $375 after dickering, including shipping.
